Otoplasty

Otoplasty is surgery designed to pin the ears closer to the head or lessen the appearance of larger than average ears. It is most commonly performed on children and teens.

Forward protruding ears are a congenital absence of the antihelix. Normally there is a smooth fold just inside the outer edge of the external ear called the antihelix. When this does not develop there is a forward protrusion of the outer ear sometimes referred to as "Dumbo ears".

Otoplasty in children is performed under general anesthesia whereas in teenagers and adults it may be accomplished under local anesthetic.

Otoplasty is a life changing procedure in that the patient now appears normal and their physiologic makeup improves by eliminating this congenital abnormality.
